Ammunition Blaze LONDON"* October 18. Three members of the National Fire Service have received awards for helping to extinguish a series of ammunition dump fires which occurred in East Anglia shortly bjfore D-Day. The fire began among stocks of rockets and small arms ammunition. The first major explosion put the fire pumps out of action, but before the second explosion occurred firemen evacuated patients from a nearby hospital which later was badly damaged. A wide area was filled with smoke from burning trees and shrubs which were ignited by phosphorus bombs. Intermittent explosions flung live grenades and shells among the firemen. The fires spread over an extensive area, some of them being half a mile from the dump. A third major explosion caused further devastation.
Though the fires were extinguished within eight hours, small outbreaks occurred many days afterward. The firemen maintained watch for several weeks before the area was considered to be safc-
