HAWKE’S BAY TEAM’S PROSPECTS

Strong Representation At Trentham Dominion Special Service. HASTINGS, October 18. Hawke's Bay will be represented on the first day of the Wellington spring meeting by a team of over 30 and on Labour Day these will be reinforced by a further five or six. This district has no representative in the Wellesley Stakes which accurately sums up the class of the early youngsters at present in commission here. Siglow is the only Bayite out of seven entrants to stand his ground in the Glen Hurdles. He is in excellent order and though not too consistent he should run well. Half a dozen of our three-year-olds will contest the Wellington Guineas. Last season Colais was good in patches. He ran poorly at Opaki, but is not yet as forward as he might be. Da Vinci’s chances will depend on the state of the track. If the going is soft he should have a chance. Golden Souvenir looks the pick of the Bay’s three-year-olds. Last Saturday he ran gamely and as his Guineas preparation was interrupted by the melee at Greenmeadows Saturday’s race at Opaki might be just what was required. After two defeats in maiden races on end, Grand Coulee is hardly a Guineas consideration. Matador, after racing at Hastings under adverse conditions when suffering from a cold, had to be cased for a week. Consequently he will not be at his peak, although his final gallop before going away Was good. Ramicourt has created a good impression when winning at Otakl and Hastings and his third at Masterton was a fair effort in the circumstances, so he is still being considered a Guineas possibility. Strong Quartet In Walnul. Four from here are to start in the Walnui Handicap. Before leaving Indian Sport galloped well enough to say that he is as well as ever. and. perhaps the distance (one mile) is his best. Boulder Dam looks the pick ot the Hawke’s Bay quartette after his second at Masterton. When in form he can always he relied upon to run a great mile. Perhaps Gayest Son’s fourth in Saturday’s sprint was not as genuine a guide as it appeared as he ran through a team of beaten horses. Virtuoso, in his two races this season, has not shown form. , , For the Rimutaka Hack half a dozen Hawke's Bay trained horses survived the ballot, the best of whom are Dark Morning and Hula Chief. Dark Morning, prior to his departure, in a gallop with Indian Sport went well enough to warrant support, while Hula Chief has only to have a change of fortune in the running to go very close to paying a dividend. Royal Duce went moderately well in his final trial when Kauri Queen (booked for the Trial on Labour Day) comfortably defeated him. , All four of this district’s representatives In the Wellington Handicap are not without chances. After his Masterton win, Glenfalloch, who is not yet back to his very best, may be the favourite. Yogi is not without a chance on his Opaki form. Bunsby is a fit horse, but may be all the better with one more public run. However, he is the local pick. Lambourn at his. best would be a risk with his weight and he Is being given a chance here by his erstwhile supporters. Koi Ragi is a brilliant galloper,' but the straight course at Trentham has found him out more than once previously and for that reason is not greatly fancied for the Shorts Handicap, in which Skyhawk is a doubtful starter. Last Saturday, in a gallop before leaving for Trentham, Poutatau ran five furlongs alone in 59 J secs, on the course proper. He came home strongly and his chances in the big sprint must appear good. Royal Heir is a lightweight prospect who galloped well at Greenmeadows on Tuesday. Eight from here remain in the October Handicap. Opaki form says H. S. Greene holds a fair hand with Joseph Conrad and Capronella. Singing Hills at his best is only moderate, while Magnus Lux is always going to win, but cannot make the grade. Fame Bian Is but a plodder. Casllda is forward, but her lack of Inches places her at a disadvantage in big fields.
