CRUISER BLOWN UP
Single Liberator’s Feat
CHUNGKING, October 17. Co-operating with Admiral Nimitz’s task force, the Fourteenth Air Force yesterday .destroyed a Japanese cruiser and probqi'l'y sank a ’destroyer in the South China Sea, says General Stilwell’s communique. American bombers also attacked shipping sheltering at Hong Kong, possibly sinking 48,000 tons. The Associated Press reports that a single Liberator blew up a heavy Japanese cruiser and sank a destroyer in 45 minutes in low-level attacks against a convoy off Formosa. The Liberator’s bombs apparently touched off the cruiser’s magazine, filling the air with shattered armour plate. The explosion thrust up the Liberator’s tail, and it took all the pilot’s strength to pull her out.
