HOUSING AS FIRST PRIORITY
Opposition to completion of the new railway station for Christchurch ’if it meant drawing on materials and labour ueeded for housing construction was expressed by Aliss Howard (Government, Christchurch East) when the Railways Department estimates were discussed in the House yesterday. Air. Watts (Opposition, Riccarton) bad obtained an assurance from the Alinister of Railways,. Air. Semple, that the construction of the Christchurch station was al the top of the priority list and would be resumed at the earliest possible moment.
Miss Howard said that, much as the Christchurch people wanted their new station. the majority would rather .see the Minister of Railways as Minister of Housing get ahead with the building of houses for returned soldiers. "We are now handing over a completed house every 45 minutes,” said Mr. Semple, “and we are not going to allow the construction of a railway station or anything else to interfere with our housing activities.”
