The “Daily Telegraph’s” Cairo correspondent says there is evidence that the German high command has begun to evacuate Salonika, which has beeu the headquarters ever since the invasion of the Balkans. -Naxos, the. largest island in the Cyclades group in the Aegean Sea and one of the few remaining islands in enemy occupation, surrendered yesterday after land and sea raiding forces had signalled for aid from the RA..F. Beaufighters made a heavy attack and afterward members of the Greek “Sacred Brigade” went ashore and took over the island. The entire Aegean Islands, except Crete, Rhodes, Leros, and Kos, have been cleared of the Germans, says the/Exchange Telegraph agency’s Cairo correspondent. ' The surrender of the German gamson on Naxos means that the whole German position in the Eastern Mediterranean has become more precarious.
