SIEGFRIED GUNS
Shelling Of Americans (Received September 28, 8.20 p.m.) LONDON, September 28. German batteries in the .Siegfried Line yesterday pitched shells eight miles across the Moselle into the American positions in the Remieh area. It was the first enemy artillery activity on this sector, says an Associated Press correspondent from the Luxemburg border. The bombardment started at 1 p.m. and continued for an hour while the Americans were moving into Remieh. Tins shelling has ended speculation as to whether the Siegfried Line ou this sector’ was without heavy guns at and above Treves, where the Americans pierced the line for ten miles. Allied planes blasted today one of the three main forts guarding Metz on the west bank of the Moselle. It is estimated that the fort and numerous subsidiary fortifications were reduced by 25 per cent.' An infantry assault was launched after the air attack, but the Americans ran into heavy mortar fire. The Germans apparently sheltered in deep fortifications during the raid and came out when the planes had left. The attack is con t in u i n g.
