HUTT TRANSPORT
Railways Department’s Evidence Criticized
The opinion that, in so far as it dealt with transport problems, _ the evidence given by officers of the Railways Department seemed merely to be a statement of enthusiastic optimism, with very little concrete fact behind it. was expressed to the Hutt Harbour Commission of Inquiry in Wellington yesterday, by Mr. N. T. Gillespie, who appeared on behalf of the Lower Hutt. City Council. Comment was made by Mr. Gillespie that the valuable nature of the evidence given by the Transport Department was in vivid contrast to (hat of the Railways Department, from which something constructive at least had been expected. biP it. appeared that not a great deal of consideration hud been given the matter by this department. A definite statement concerning transport problems, road wifleniug and possible costs of straightening the Hutt route was sought so that if the establishment of a harbour were not found to be necessary they could be assured of a prompt, efficient and regular transport service to the Hutt A alley. The evidence so far had been only an expression of opinion. _ . The chairman of the commission. Sir Francis Frazer, said it would look into lhe matter.
