Foreign Minister Resigns RIO DE JANEIRO, August‘23. .. It is oflicially announced that President Vargas has accepted the resignation of the Brazilian Foreign Minister, Senhor Iswaldo Aranha. The announcement praised Senhor Aranha for giving Brazil numerous signal services, and added: "The Government judges it opportune to reaffirm the directives of his foreign policy of continental solidarity and strict co-operation with the Allies.” Senhor Pedro Leao A eloso will become the new Minister. . The Associated Press of America says that Senhor Aranha is believed to have resigned a week ago because he was humiliated when the police raided ami closed the Society of Friends of America half an hour before he was due to address the organization on the occasion of his investiture us the society s vicc’"tlic' ncw York "Herald Tribune’s" Buenos Aires correspondent learns that Senator Aranha was forced to resign o.v a group of army officers who opposed his foreign policy on the ground that it esstablisbed too close relations with the United States and blocked Brazilian recognition of the Argentine Government. It is generally agreed that Aranha s resign, at ion constitutes a severe blow to the United States. Whether the change will seriously damage continental unity will depend on whether President Vargas can restrain the elements responsible for Aranha's overthrow.
