(BY

St. Simon.)

Bashful Lady, one of the best performed handicap marcs in recent seasons, has been purchased by Mr. J. A. Mitchell, Santa Rosa Stud, Longburn. She has been taken out of training and will be mated this season with Battle Song. Bashful Lady is a seven-year.old mare by Paper Money from Lady Blissful, by Elysian from the Imported Ladas mare Lady AL aywaru 11, and was bred in Southland by Air. 1. J. Trail, who sold the dam with Bashful Lady at foot to Mr. J. Burnett, who raced Bashful Lady throughout her career. She commenced racing in the winter of her three-year-old season and had 30 starts tor 11 wins, six seconds and three thirds for stakes to the value of £3770. Her successes Included two Winter Cups, the C J.C. Islington Handicap, the Brabazon Handicap, the Riverton Champion Hack Handicap, and her placings included two seconds in the Riverton Cup and third m this year’s Winter Cup. The agents responsible for the sale of Bashful Lady were Wright, Stephenson and Co.. Ltd.

Taranaki Hunt Meeting. Meetings held in conjunction by the Taranaki and Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Clubs at New Plymouth before the war made one of the most popular two-day fixtures on the 'calendar. Hunting ioik possess an enthusiasm for true winter racing that is often missing at flat meetings, and even the "hard-boiled" regulars looked forward to the September appointment in New Plymouth each year. Under the .wartime cut these clubs have been restricted to one day a season, and to meet tho convenience of owners and patrons the meeting has been removed to tho more central venue at Hawera. The clubs race there tomorrow, and the card is. a good one, each event being well filled with about the best of what talent is offering at this time of the racing year.

Dual Acceptors. Aa Is usual with hunt club meetings, the card for the Hawera fixture this week contains many dual acceptors. Horses with more than one engagement are lar Avion, Kinsman. Duncannon, Ascot Bloom, Lady Midlan, Illuminacre, Hunting Comet, Colonel Plato, Sir Plato, Mr. Cute, Sublime Eox, Dymondy, A ’ l , ocnl J’ !,^':,J-' o "7 l ‘ sword. Political Boy, Sivam, Cetewayo, Keite-he, Vermette, Gay Anne, . .Match, Keen Play, Boden Park, Amigo, Kiimanagh, Greek Art, Vermette and Martial Note, Dark Morning.

Won Last Start. • r r„„.„ po The class in the hurdle race at Hawera tomorrow is very mixed, and Colonel Bogey, a winner at his last start, the favourite. At the Manawatu-Rangitikei Hunt he won from Golden fide and Red Glare, with Monmouth, a double winner at Ricarton, fourth. If the going is heavy tomorrow, the Colonels chance will be 1m proved, as he shines in bad ground.

N Amon? the* acceptors for the hiirdle race at Hawera is Duncannon, who also claims an engagement on the flat. P ,n !9au n 0“ I 1 ® had a fair amount of schooling, being tried in this department some time ago when trained by S. McGreal n the north before his transfer to AWapunl. He was a useful horse on the flat and have to jump well to have a chance if tho hurdle race is selected for him.

Showed Useful Form. \ nni Longsword, who races in the same col ours as Gulf Stream, is engaged in two races at the Hawera meeting. He hud , nis first outing in the Trial Plate a.the■ llngton July meeting, when he ~f inis“ ®„ just out of a place. His next meeting was at the hunt at Hastings, where he ran twice and was unlucky in the runnineach time, finishing fourth in the maiden and second, after getting away badlj, in a hack event. On that form he should have prospects in either race at Hawera.

Recent Winner. . The Hastings maiden winner Dark Morning is engaged at Hawera tomorrow and has the best recent form of the acceptors in the Wallii Hack Handicap with a second, a third, and a win in Ins last three starts. Dark Morning lias taken some time to come solid, but his latest performances have borne the mark of consistency and if the going should be heavy tomorrow he might further his record for, like other members of the Baffles breed, he Is not hampered by winter conditions.

Finances Sound. ... „ . The annual report of the Masterton Rae. Ing Club states that the question of liquidating the bank guarantee suspense account of £l3OO was taken up with the guarantors, and a satisfactory arrangement was agreed upon whereby this 11abillt.v has disappeared from the club s balance-sheet. The account was liquidated for the sum of £3lO, and the club places ou record its appreciation of the generous attitude of the guarantors. The year’s working resulted in a profit of £lOl2, from which a taxation will have to be paid. The club raced on only one day last season and the turnover ot £31,460 was a record for a one-day meeting. The finances of the club are’ now In a sound position.

Loss on the Year. Tlie restrictions on transport and heavy expenditure incurred in repairing the club’s buildings resulted in the Wairoa Racing Club losing £370 on the past year’s operations. The club was allocated one day’s racing for the season and tho decision to proceed witli the meeting in spite of the difficulties of travel met with the approbation ot owners and trainers. Though no profit was made, the club felt justified in making a donation of £lOO to the patriotic funds.

Death of Owner’s Wife. The sympathy of the racing community will be extended to Mr. R. J. Murphy, steward of the Wellington Racing Club, and an owner and breeder for many years, in the loss of his wife, whose death occurred in Wellington on Wednesday. Mrs. Murphy had been ill for several 'weeks, and because of her serious condition Mr. Murphy did not attend the,Grand National meeting, where lie won the Islington Handicap with Kevin.

Novice Hurdler. Iceland Spar has had a fair amount, of schooling over hurdles in recent weeks. Though careful in his jumping, he has given encouragement to his trainer to carry on with his preparation. Probably he will have his first race over hurdles at Ashburton.

Upper Hutt Patron, Norse received a flesh injury when he fell at tlie Grand National meeting, and later was presented to his trainer. It. Register, who sold him this week to Mr. C. Ferguson, Upper Hutt, Norse will remain in Register’s stable and will represent his new owner at Ashburton.

Thoraide Leased. Tlioralde was taken over on lease by h. ,T Bovle after tlie Grand National meeting and should make good as a steeplechaser next season. Boyle intended to keep Platform and Boloyua at Riccarton till after the Ashburton meeting, but was able to get them home to Invercargill this week.

Persian Gulf’s Greatness. The Coronation Cup, one mile and a naH, run at Newmarket in June, was won l>y Persian Gulf, a son of the Triple Crown winner Bahram. His performance was so convincing that writers described him as tlie best staying four-year-old in England and fit to rank with any of tlie champion stayers of past years. He defeated lus lending rival, Umiddad, nt equal weights, going into the lead nt the start and remaining in front all the way to win easily from High Chancellor 8.4, and Umiddad 9.0. Bahram, sire of Persian Gulf, was sold for export to America at the great price of £(».000. lie left ills marl; in England before lie went to America, as lie is tlie sire of Big Gaine, who won the Two Thousand Guineas in the colours of King George VI, and is now at the National Stud, and also of Turklmn, who was runner-up to Pont L'Evcque In the lierbv and won the St Lcgor.
