SPLIT IN NAZI PARTY

New German Underground PROMINENT MEN HIDING (From Godfrey Blunden, Special Correspondent.) STOCKHOLM, August 20. ’ Hundreds of important Nazis have gone underground in Germany since the attempt to assassinate Hitler on July 20. Whether they have yet. been able to establish any organization linking the anti-lliller elements is nor. known, A Black Guard group leader named Nebe, who is believed to have been one of the anti-Hitlcr plotters, is being sought by the Gestapo. Two police majors whom the Gestapo accuses of having aided Nebe have alerady been arrested. Artillery General Fritz Lindeman, who was previously believed to have gone over to the Russians, is now stated to be in Germany. He has not been imprisoned. it is reported. A Berlin report claims that FieldMarshal von Brnuchitsch. former Cotn-tnander-in-Chief of the German Army, who was dismissed by Hitler in December, 1941, has published a protestation of support for Hitler. Pamphlets attacking Hitler are circulating in Germany. Some were even printed in Germany, despite the Gestapo. They describe in detail the “facts” of tiie recent attempt on Hitler’s life. Soldiers’ Letters.

Though there are no authciiiie reports of a strong German underground organization, the 14,009,000 foreign workers inside Germany have in their ranks secret societies which are always ready to distribute auti-llitlcr propaganda. In occupied countries reports from underground organizations this week have emphasized tiie poor morale of German soldiers, hundreds of whom are regularly punished for neglect of duty. An indication of the fear of German leaders is tiie announcement that no more letters will be exchanged between soldiers at the front aud their people at home.

In future 'hi; only contact German troops will ilrnvc with home win be through Goebbels's newspaper, "Front und ileinint.” . . , . An importnnt factor-in the lowering of German internal morale has been the practically undiminished Allied bombing of Berlin ami other objectives, despite Um air support given to the invasion armies. The Germans/are still plugging the flying bomb as a propaganda line, but Jack "of real information regarding the effect of these bombs in Englund and the obvious fact that they did not affect Allied military operations have robbed the propaganda, of much value.
