Fay Received By Soldiers
Information as to wehther it was correct that the troops who loaded the ammunition which the Wellington waterside workers refused to handle unless they were paid an additional 2/- an hour were paid 11/6 for workifig a shift from 8 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. and 4/- for a night shift from 9.30 to 8 a.m. was sought by Mr. Sheat (Opposition, Batea) in notice of a question in the House yesterday. He also asked if it were correct that these soldiers were told that it cost the Army fl a day to keep them and consequently the Army was entitled to the balance of their pay. in spite of the fact that the men who worked at night attended to their normal military duties before going to work. Mr. Sheat’s question was directed to the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, and he asked, if the Array did not receive the difference in pay, would the Minister say who received the benefit of this cheap labour.
