VICTORY LOAN

Trend Of Events Seen As A Good Omen The trend of events in the war was a very good omen for the loan, said the mayor of Wellington, Mr. Appleton, at a meeting held yesterday for the formation of a business men’s committee in connexion with the £40,000,000 V ictory Loan. Wellington’s target is £4,700,000. “We should be able to cash in on what has 'been achieved,” he said. “We want to finish the job, but we must have the money to do it.” The danger of mental inertia now that the war was going so well was stressed by Mr. R. H. Nimmo, deputy-chairman of the Wellington District War Loan Committee. There was n growing psychology of “why bother any further now that tile war was won.” That must be combated. The money must be raised, and he hoped the public response would be such that every penny would be obtained voluntarily. Mr. N. Hunt, who was appointed chairman of the business men's committee, gave an outline of the organization for conducting the campaign among the approximately 1000 business firms in Wellington.

Tile New Zealand Federation of Labour has decided to invest £2OOO in the Victory Loan. In a circular to all affiliations it stresses the special responsibility industrial labour has in connexion with the war effort, and appeals to every trades council and affiliated union and to all trade unionists to support the loan to the utmost. The target set to be subsreihed bv the federation, its trades councils, affiliated unions and individual members is £10.000.000.
