STEPS TO VICTORY

Momentous Events In Europe t RESOLUTION OF HOUSE A resolution recording New Zealand’s gratification at the momentous events of tjie liberation of Paris and the capitulation of Rumania was adopted in the House of Representatives yesterday. It was moved by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, and seconded by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Holland. The tenins of the resolution were:—

“That this House of Representatives in Parliameut assembled records its deep sense of satisfaction on the occasion of the liberation of Paris and the capitulation of Rumania, and desires to express in heartfelt terms its warmest congratulations to the armed and civilian forces of the United Nations who, by their untiring efforts over long years ot adversity and by their signal achievements during recent weeks, have contributed so much to these events; and, further, that this House, on behalf of the people of New Zealand, affirm their determination to continue undiminished their efforts toward final victory against all our enemies and their desire to collaborate in all international measures that will ensure for the future a framework of security within which the whole family of nations can live and work in freedom and peace.” In moving the resolution, Mr. Fiaser said that we were not celebrating victory and were not yet near victory, but it was thought fitting—and he was sure the country would also think so—to mark the very important step toward victory by expressing our gratification. We ar glad that Paris has been freed from the Nazi yoke,” said Mr. Fraser, and tha the French people themselves and the French Fighting Forces have taken such a prominent, conspicuous and courageous part in that achievement. I think that far from any thought of resting on such victories there should be no slackening our efforts because our forces are advancing toward victory and some striking partial victories have been achieved. The steps toward the defeat of our enemies should inspire everyone of us whatever our duties or tasks to still greater efforts to achieve speedier and final victory. Mr. Holland said it gave. him very great joy to second the resolution.
