THROUGH OWN LINES
How German Prisoners Surrendered (Received August 22, 9.10 p.m.) LONDON, August 22. Allied soldiers in northern France posed as prisoners of their German captives to get through, the lines of the Nazi Black Guard Division. Allied soldiers, four United States officers, a British officer, and a hospital orderly, sheltered in a ditch from attack by United States Thunderbolts. Then six German officers jumped in beside them. A United States lieutenant said:, “We told the Germans that the whole district was surrounded, and that if they became our prisoners we would keep them away from French civilians. They agreed. Posing as the Germans’ captives, we. the captors, went unarmed while they were armed. “Later a party of 25 Germans led by officers approached our group. I told them they were surrounded by American forces. The officer turned to me and said, ‘l’m your prisoner,’ and handed me his revolver. We shared our food with them and kept on walking toward the Allied lines. Later we saw a small boy carrying a French flag. We sent him with a message to our lines. Three tanks then drove up and took charge of our prisoners.”
