BREMEN’S GRIM FATE
Huge Devastation Area (British Official Wireless.) . RUGBY, August 20. Air photographs show that in a big attack made on Friday night, in which only four planes were lost , out of more than 1000 aircraft which took-part, Bremen suffered the fate o£ Hamburg. The main area of complete devastation in Bremen extends from the docks to the centre of the town and the main railway stations for over two miles along the north z bank of the river, and in several places the area of devastation is a mile wide. , , xi In Stettin, which was attacked on the night of August 16, one area of complete devastation measures about 900 yards by 750 yards, and many blocks have been completely gutted by fire. A group of R.A-F. Bomber Command has now been working for several months against the air defences of the Germans, and has sprung one surprise after another on the enemy. It has attacked those air defences in many different ways. Its own night-fighters and Mosquitoes have directly attacked enemy night-fight-ers as well as ground defences, and at the same time many different and ingenious methods have been used to deceive the defence organization and disrunt its communications. Since January last Mosquitoes have shot down more than 100 night-fighters for certain and have damaged many more. Our offensive Mosquitoes are regarded so highly by the Germans that if a German pilot succeeds in shooting one down he is allowed to count this as two aircraft destroyed.
