Nearly Clear Of Snipers (British Official Wireless.) (Received August 20, 9 p.m.) RUGBY, August 19. A Mediterranean Allied communique says: “In Italy, heavy rain fell along the front of the Allied Armies. In Florence troops of the Eighth Army have virtually cleared the centre portion of the town from snipers. On both sides of the upper Arno, Valley end on the Adriatic sector, British, Indian, and Polish troops have sent forward deep reconnaissance patrols. “West of the Florence sector,. Fifth Army and enemy patrols were active." General Alexander has been informed by the commanding general of the Rome Allied area command that the Pope has expressed- his appreciation of the fine example of bearing and conduct of the Allied troops in Rome, says a Rome war correspondent.
