Civic Centre
Sir, —I am pleased' to notice that the city council has adopted a plan for a civic centre with a considerable portion as open space for gardens toward Willis Street. It is fitting that the Capital City should provide pleasant space in the centre of the city, and available for shoppers and citizens generally to rest awhile. It is to be hoped that the space will be surrounded on Wakefield and Harris Streets and the boundary facing Willis Street by pleasant trees, such as silver beeches, aud be planted with shrubs in various places. (Lawns and flowers are not enough—do let us have a few graceful trees.) Also, that it will eventually take in the area occupied by the Working Men’s Club, the. city engineer’s office, and the Mercer Street roadway. This would give a fine aspect from several of our main thoroughfares and provide .a real '‘break.” Surely not too much for Wellington to provide! Would it be possible to include a small pool for junior to sail his toy boat? There are no facilities anywhere handy for this. A balcony on the western end of the Town Hall for the making of civic announcements should prove useful. —I am, etc., VICTORY GARDENS. Wellington, August 18.
