LARGER TROUT EXPECTED

Coming Fishing Season

Anglers will be interested to know that the fishing season will open on October 1, and it is expected that the .trout will be larger but not in such great quantities as hitherto, states a report of the chairman'Of the Wellington Acclimatization Society. The winter has been very mild without any big floods, and as the breeding redds have not been greatly disturbed there should be a larger natural increase. The Masterton hatchery is again in operation and the order i’or supplies of ova has been doubled. Already 25,000 rainbow trout •are in the process of hatching aud will be liberated in the creeks surrounding the Wairarapa Lake. Last week the first consignment of brown ora was received from the South Island, and it is expected that a million fry will be available for distribution. The practical work of rearing and liberation is to progress side by side with the scientific work of research so that the shortage of small fish reported by anglers should soon be restored. The “fly” purist has been provided for and more water has been opened up for the minnow fishermen, who, after travelling a long distance, find the river too muddy for fly. The bully fisherman will be able to fish further up the Hutt, Rangitikei, and Ruamahunga rivers. Altogether the new fish committee is reported to have done its best to cater for all classes of afiglers in the forthcoming season.
