VALUE OF GAIETY CLUB

Praise By Lady Newall At Birthday Celebrations

First birthday celebrations at the Gaiety Club in Wellington on. Saturday night were graced by a visit troin Lady Newall. On arrival her Excellency was received by Mrs. J. S. Martin, president of the Y.W.C.A., and Misses D. M. Lynn and P. G. Kindle, secretaries. Miss June Tierney presented Lady Newall with a posy and Miss Elva Nicholson, on behalf of club members welcomed her Excellency. , . The years of youth were thrilling, but it was'also a difficult time, said Lady Newall. Youth was seldom clear-mind-ed or sure of'its ground and was therefore eager to convey the impression that it was. not lacking in experience. It was constantly exploring and had not had time .to assess values. , During that period it. was bound to be more or less selfconseious and sensitive. Grown-ups were anxious to help young people, for they knew the dangers of tinsel mid glamour and how they misled aud dazzled. They also knew the value of leisure time and energy and wanted to avoid wasted effort; ~ That was where a club such as this one was invaluable. The team spirit, in play and service accomplished amazing results. There were rules in every game and a good team must pull together. Lady Newall said she was certain that there was a great deal of talent and skill among the members just waiting to be developed by meeting together aud co-operating. Her Excellency said she hoped these clubs would be so popular that they would spread all over the Dominion, specially where young people were unable to live in their own homes. After the singing of ‘There 11 Always be an England/’ tliG normal actin* ties proceeded at Lady Newall's express wish, and the young people on the club committee were presented, to her.. Her Excellency evinced great interest in all activities, watched the dancing with keen appreciation, and congratulated the leader of the band. Before her departure, Detmar Foam expressed the club s thanks and appreciation, to Lady Newall for the honour she had conferred on the club in being present. This year the club’s concert party will be under the direction of Mr. Frank Hoy, latn of the Kiwi Concert Party. Mr. Hoy's plans include a large increase in the' number in the orchestra and a remodelling of the personnel of the concert party to form a chorus of 12 and various specialty artists. Any interested young people arc invited to call at the Gaiety Club for registration forms and further particulars.
