MEN’S HOCKEY

The -paramount interest in Saturdays hockev matches in Welllignton lay in the meetiiig of the two unbeaten teams in the senior grade, Karori and University A. Those who went out to Karuri lurk to watch it were well rewarded. It was. a sparkling game, with the decision in doubt un to the last minute. Karori won, but the margin was but one goal, and that scored against the balance of play in the second lull!. ■ Each team was without one of Its important forwards. Karori lacked Chapman, and Hie Varsity team was without Nicholls. Nevertheless, both sets of forwards were very dangerous every time they went oh the attack, and both goals had frequent narrow escapes, with the plnv quickly alternating from end to end. 'l*ho first goal fell To Neate, Karori s outside right, who flashed into the circle to put In an uutstoppable shot after Barry, the Varsity goalkeeper, had managed to block a hot one from another Karori forward. , ; . Karori did not hold this lead for more than a tew minutes. Varsity attacked down the right wing, and after a scramble in the Karori goal the ball went out to Win Smiler, who made no mistake. Halftime came with these‘scores unaltered, and Varsity, perhaps, could be considered fortunate, Karori having had the larger share of the attacking, but falling to increase their score because of over-impati-ence In shooting. Sim was specially noticeable in this connexion.

When the second half began there was a change, Varsity becoming the chief attackers,' and it was not long before Ivor Ting put them ahead after a melee In tho Karori goalmouth. Karori reacted swiftly, nnd Sim levelled the scores with a clean shot. Varsity contiuiicd Io have the balance of the play, the Karori goal having some very narrow escapee. It was Karori, however, who scored, Rowe, their Inside right, notching tlie goal. This proved to be the end of the scoring, ami the whistle went with varsity on the at-, tack. Results r—
