CONSPIRACY QUASHED

Claim By Germans • LONDON, July 21. All who participated in the attempt against Hitler's life "have been liquidated, ” declared the German home radio. It is disclosed that the chief conspirator against Hitler was not Count von Stuffenberg (as stated by Hitler), but another general who is unnamed and who is reported to have committed suicide immediately after the failure of the attempt. The German overseas news agency stated that Colonel-General Beck, formerly chief of the Army General Staff, was among the few conspirators against Hiller. “Beck is no longer among the living,” it added. General von Kictel, chief of the combined staff, was not injured in the assassination attempt. The man who was killed'was a Press stenographer. General Beck retired in 1938. He was regarded as Iho “brains” of the German Army, and is reported to have opposed the war. The British United Press slates that General Ludwig Beck, who was 63, did not see eye to eye with Hitler on many aspects of foreign policy affecting the army. He is stated to have exercised a moderating influence on the Nazi military policy in order to avoid military conflict against France and Russia. He was not a political general. lie offered his resignation to Hitler early in 1938, but this was refused.

The Stockholm correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain says, according to a traveller from Germany, that two German divisions in East Prussia revolted on Wednesday, apparently touching off the movement which culminated in the attack against Hitler. Tim correspondent added: “This is the first direct report from Germany since the announcement of the attempted assassination.”
