COMBINED PATRIOTIC APPEAL

Address By Retiring Mayor

“Since the outbreak of war, countless voluntary workers throughout the province of Wellington have given time and energy in raising patriotic funds to buy comforts and amenities which mean so much to our servicemen,” said the mayor of Wellington. Mr. Hislop, in an address last night. “When I tell you that the Wellington province must find 224 per cent, of the Dominion total, you will realize what a big job these workers have undertaken. “From time to time there has been criticism about the use to which patriotic funds have been put. More than one returned man has said when asked about the patriotic funds, ‘I never got anything from them, but we were well treated by the Y.M.C.A.,’ or the Salvation Army, or the Red Cross, or the Catholic War Services Board, as the case may be. When it was explained that these bodies rely on patriotic funds to do their work, they said, ‘That’s a different story. In that case we say the patriotic funds are doing a magnificent job.’ “On the eve of my retirement I wapt to stress this point—whatever problems may confront us at home, we must not for one moment forget the .tlebt we owe to those who are serving in the armed forces. With momentous days ahead the need for these comforts must be apparent to all. It is gratifying to note that the first phase of the campaign is bringing excellent results from business and professional men. “It may call for a sacrifice to make a donation, but our servicemen think nothing of sacrificing their lives if need be. Our men are renowned for the way they pull together. Let us emulate them, let us put all our weight behind the appeal.”
