Citizens’ Association Mayors AUCKLAND, DUNEDIN, CHRISTCHURCH (Results of voting in other centres are reported by the Press dissociation as follows :—

Auckland.— ln a triangular contest for the Auckland mayoralty, the sitting mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, who was sponsored by the Citizens’ and Ratepayers’ Association, was successful by a margin of G3BG votes. The figures were: Allum, 17,402; W. T. Anderton, M.P. ■((Labour), 11/106 ;,T. Victor Macky (Independent), 7440. The Citizens’ Association. candidates won all 2(1 seats on the city council, returning 16 members of the former council. The only Labour representative on that council was Mrs. M. M. ©reaver, who was defeated. There was a total of 02 candidates, including 19 Labour nominees and two Communists, for whom Labour supporters were officially urged to vote. The Citizens’ Association won all the Auckland city seals on the harbour board and the hospital board. Mr. A. J. Moody, chairman of the hospital board, was re-elected. Christchurch. — The Citizens’ Association candidates gained the most sweeping victory over their Labour opponents since Labour first became a force in local body politics 20 years ago. The sitting mayor, Mr. E. H. Andrews, defeated his predecessor in office, Mr. MacFarlane, M.P.. by 8979 votes —a majority unequalled since 1927. The preliminary count gives Citizens’ candidates 15 of the 16 seats on the city council, eight of the 10 city seats on the North Canterbury Hospital Board, three of the four city seats on the Lyttelton Harbour Board, and all four of the central district seats on both the North Canterbury Catchment Board .and Waimakariri River Trust. As in 1941. the polling in Christchurch was light, though the number of valid votes cast for the mayoralty (36,119) has only twice been exceeded. Dunedin. — In the mayoral contest Mr. D. C. Cameron (Citizens’ Association) was elected, defeating Dr. I). G. McMillan (Labour) by 15,859 votes to 15,169, a majority of 690. For the 12 seats on the city council, six Citizens’ and six Labour candidates were returned. Three sitting members, all sponsored by the Citizens’ Association, lost their seats and were replaced by three Labour nominees.

On the Otago Hospital Board Labour will have five representatives compared with thrdfe previously, ami on the Otago Harbour Board its representation has been increased' from two to three. Timaru.—The mayoralty resulted as follows: A. E. .S. Hanan (retiring mayor), 5085; P. B. Foote (deputy-mayor), 1180; A. S. Kinsman, 467. Geraldine.—D. C. McKechnie. retiring mayor, was re-elected unopposed! Teinukn.—L, Robins was elected unopposed. The retiring mayor, W. H. McMillan. did not seek re-election. Waimate.—W. F. Boland, retiring mayor, was returned unopposed. Westport.—Borough and county elections proved interesting. In the borough, Mr. J. M. Robertson was returned unopposed as mayor, and the council was elected in the following.order: C. Howard, G. Mockett, 8. Jenkins, J. Kilkenny, Rev. A. McNeur, J. Fairbairn, A. Ridsdale, C. Thomas, K. Roberts. For the Buller Hospital Board the successful candidates were: Mrs. C. Roiberteon (mayoress), Mrs. Ridsdale, and IV. E. L. Gay (borough). J. Ward, Mrs. Tyler, J. Dowgray, Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, M.L.C., and J. Niven (county). In the riding elections. J. Dowgray, a director of the Bank of New Zealand, the Mon. Mclntyre. and J. Niven, former members, were all defeated for seats on the Buller County Connell, but were elected to the hospital board. (Successful candidates for the county were: W. 11. Gourley, S. R. Johnston, I. Tyler, F. Connew. J. Ward, M. Durkin, D. J. Archer. Three of the successful candidates for borough council—all three former members —were nominee's of the Labour Party. Greymouth.—District elections results were: Greymouth: Mayoralty, F. A. Kitehiugliam (unopposed). Hokitika: Mayoralty, A. P. Elcock (unopposed). Ruhanga: K. IV. Kennedy (unopposed). Ross: K. O. May defeated J. Holmes. Kumara: No nominations, and only oue for the council. Polling yas not heavy for the Greymouth Borough Council. Four Labour, four Citizens, and oue Independent were elected. For the Grey County Council the extended franchise resulted in only one change. On the Grey Harbour Board there were three changes, and on the Grey Power Board four one employee being elected. P. Blanehfield headed the Greymouth Council and Power Board polls, and, Mrs. D. Parfitt headed the Greymouth Hospital Board-poll. On the Hokitika Borough Council there are five new members, and on the Westland County Council. Tour.

New Plymouth.—Candidates nominated •by the New Plymouth Labour Party for the borough council. New Plymouth Harbour Board, and the Taranaki Hospital Board, failed to gain a single scat. Citizens’ tickets 'bein<r returned in all cases. Patea.—The contest for the mayoralty, regarded as a Labour stronghold, had a surprise result, the sitting mayor. F. defeating the Labour candidate. A. H. Langslow, who contested the Patea seat at the general election, by 378 votes to 238. . Party polities entered little into tho elections in any other parts of Taranaki.

Hnwera. —The mayoralty resulted: L. H. Clapham. the sitting mayor. 1336 votes: E. H. Linnell. 412. The mayors of the other Taranaki boroughs were returned unopposed. Pieton. —Mayoralty: Williams (I.). 40T; Davies (L.), 244. Council, inorder of polling: Mears. Townsend. Cornish. Whiting, Hodgson. Butterworth, Kenny. Young, Greiß (elected); Corrigan. Broadbent, Smith. Baxter. Blenheim.—Mr. C. T. Smith was re-eleet-ed mayor unopposed. Those elected councillors were: Wicks (C.). 1365; Girling (C.), 1261; Tavlor (C.), 1245; Dix (C.). 1235; Dunean (I.), 1207: Costello (L.), 1097; Jamieson (C.)_ 1061); Jiitchell (.L.). 1036; Hood (C.), 1035. Unsuccessful: Glover (C.‘,‘ 1032: Cook (L.). 992; McLeod (L.). JI30; Prvde (C.). 067; MeFedries (L.). 834; Foiev (L.). 712: Rodgers (L.), 6SB: Kane (L.),‘ SOS; Trainor (L.). 438. All sitting councillors seeking re-election were returned. The distribution of seats is unaltered. Power board: Kabone (C.R 1112; Duncan (C.). 10*55 (elected): Costello (L.I, 905; Mitchell (L.), 567. Hospital board: Mrs. Ilounsell (C. and L.), 1353: Wicks (C.) 984; Girling (C.). 933 (elected); McLeod (L.). 833: Bent (I.). 738; Gee (L.). 632; Whitford (I.)’. 411. Mrs. Hounsell’s name was on both tickets. Invercargill.—Abraham Wachner was elected mayor of Invercargill, defeating A. W. Jones by 7321 votes to 2270. The referendum hold on the proposal of the Invercargill Licensing Trust to establish liquor premises in the suburbs resulted in electors favouring the proposal by 5244 votes to 4212. Gore.—The sitting mayor. W. D. Shelton, was defeated by A. T. Newman, by 1098 votes to 900.
