Chinese Counter-Attacks In Honan x (R€CeiVed Ma £oN’DON, o May'2B. ‘‘Chinese forces counter-attacking on the Loyang sector in Honan have made further progress on all routes, particur larly in the area east of Lushih. in western Yunnan,” says a Chinese communique. “We have recaptured all the heights north and south of Lengshuikow." General Stilwell's communique says: “Chinese and American aircraft yesterday inflicted many- casualties on the Japanese in the vicinity of Loyang. At least 30 trucks were destroyed. _ A small vc/;sel south-east of Hong Kong was damaged and six troop-laden river boats on the Yangtze were set on fire. Many casualties were inflicted on enemy troops near Shansi. Planes also set on fire a supply dump at Shan-hsien and strafed installations at Pinglu. One aircraft is missing from these operations.” A Chinese air communique reports: “Chinese and American planes yesterday bombed and strafed Japanese barracks at Sinyang. Planes also destroyed eight rail-cars and two trucks south of the city. Chinese bombers attackell factories at Maotsintu, on the Yellow River. Other planes hit troop-carrying trucks on the Honan Plain.” A Chinese army spokesman said on Friday that radio contact had ceased with Loyang, where the Japanese had bee\ attacking for a fortnight, and that the city had probably fallen.' Overcoming strenuous enemy automatic weapons and' mortar fire. General Stilwell’s Chinese and Americans have advanced a mile and a half south of Myitkyina. in Burma, reports a Chinese communique. Troops of the 38th Division captured Warong and killed 100 Japanese. Anothei- Chinese unit captured a huge supply dump east of Mogaung Valley. The previous claim that the Chinese had cut the Burma Road south of Lungling was incorrect. A transmission mistake gave the name of a village recaptured' as Chefang, whereas Chifang, northeast of Tengchung. was the village taken.
