JAPANESE ISLANDS HIT
(British ' Official Wireless.) (Received May 28. 10.25 p.m.) RUGBY, May 27. Shumushu. in the Kuriles, Matsuwa Island, Ponape, in the eastern Carolines, and the Marshalls were raided on Thursday by Uniteel States aircraft, according to a United States Fleet announcement quoted in a Washington message. The two first-named targets were attacked, by single aircraft which met no opposition. On Ponape, docks, warehouses and gun positions were hit. Anti-aircraft fire was meagre here, but in the Marshalls it wns “medium to moderate” wheu Corsairs. Danntlesses and Hellcats bombed and bit runways, anti-aircraft batteries and barracks. One Corsair made a forced landing near Wotje atoll, but the pilot was rescued. ____________
