RED CROSS WORKERS

Reception At Prime Minister’s Home Members of the prisoner of war food packing group and the sewing and knitting circles of the Wellington Red Cross ■were recently entertained at the residence of the Prime Minister by the Northland sub-centre of the Red Cross Society. Fifty guests were received by the president. Mrs. H. Gapes, and the secretary, Mrs. McQueen, and a delightful programme was presented by Mesdames A. Graham and Coomber and Miss Shirley Craig. Captain Gerard described some of nis experiences as a prisoner of war in Italy, and specially emphasized the value of the Red Cross prisoner of war food parcels distributed to prisoners. Appreciative mention was made of the loyal service the committees were giving in the packing of the pareels and of the work of the sewing and knitting circles. Captain Galloway. Dominion secretary of the Red Cross, thanked Mrs. Fraser £pi’ her keen interest in the work, and for the loan of her home. Afternoon tea was served by members of the committees.. Blind Members’ Outing. Hospitality arranged by the Eastbourne Red Cross sub-centre resulted in 05 blind members recently being entertained at Day’s Bay. They were met by the president of the Eastbourne subcentre, Mrs. Wise, and members of her committee. The morning entertainment was in the form of competitions, after which luncheon was served and guests were taken to the bench. A programme of music in the pavilion was arranged during the afternoon, items being given by Mesdames Merle Gamble, Press, Downer and Boutell. Mrs. Cortlins accompanied the vocalists. Four of the guests also contributed items. Miss Wharton and David. Bavin giving recitations and Mrs. Green and Mrs. laylor pianoforte solos. Thanks were expressed by Messrs. Tindall and Griffiths on behalf of the blind visitors.
