LABOURERS’ WAGES
A statement from Auckland that labourers’ wages had increased by 60 tier cent, since 1920 was not correct, said Mr. I’. M. Butler, secretary of the AV pilington Labourers and Related Trades I nion, yesterday. He said that labourers’ wages in 1920'were 1/7 an hour; today they were 2/4 an hour. This was an increase of 47.4 per cent. This excluded the cost of living bonus which was applied generally to wages and salaries. Even tlie increase of 47 per cent, did not convey a proper nicture. as the wages were at present subject to a 12J tier cent, deduction for National Security and Social Security taxation, while the nurclmsing_ power of wages was further reduced because of additional unseen taxation such ns the rate of exchange and sales tax. It was problematical whether there had been any real increase in labourers’ wages since 1920; definitely there had not been an increase of 60 per cent.
