NUTRITION RESEARCH

Suggestion To Minister Of Health A comprehc-usive anil adequately financed nutritional institute for New Zealand .was advocated by a deputation from thd Sunlight. League, Christchurch, which recently waited on the Minister of Health. Mr. N’ordmeyer. The chairman of the league. Dr. D. E. Currie, suggested the housing of all branches of research in a single block, so that research workers might share one library; they would have the additional advantage of easy consultation, coordination, and discussion. In New Zealand. said Dr. Currie, large sums were spent on animal and agricultural research, and inadequate sums were being spent on research into human health. “New Zealand has depended mainly on the findings of nutritional research workers overseas, but New Zealand, on account of its soil, has certain peculiar problems such as the relation of our soil to caries and goitre, which are calling out for investigation,” said Mr. L. IV. McCaskill.. Nearly all the research activities promoted by the Government were concerned with problems that were primarily economic, said Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland. The health of our pastures and of our farm animals was the subject of much research, hut to round out its health programme the Government should do much more to promote research into questions relating to the health of the people, especially on questions of nutrition.

Y.W.C.A. Wartime Activity. Most thoughtful citizens appreciate the many complex problems created by the influx of girls and women to war jobs in Wellington. Therefore, the extremely practical work which the Y.W.C.A. is doing in the solving of these problems should have the commendation and support of the community. The Y.W.C.A. has tackled these matters intelligently and without fuss. For instance, the association has attracted some 2000 youngsters to its Gaiety Club, which gives them useful and wholesome interests in sport, recreation and entertainments, in •contrast to stvct roaming. A special appeal day will bt held in Wellington on February 23 for funds to maintain the association's many activities in this direction.
