The Hedgehog
Sir, —At a time when the problem before us is how to feed starving millions, it is of interest to learn that we do lint know what the native duck should eat or the worst enemies of game birds. Meanwhile the grub-eater and insect destroyer —the hedgehog—suffers in being ranked ias vermin, possibly from “personal suspicions” of the acclimatization society. Might not the hedgehog be well released till more scientific pronouncement made on its general utility, as against its occasional destruction of the eggs <>t game birds? The mass production of food, so hindered by iusccts, is the vital issue, not the safeguarding of game.—l am, etc., ELLEN VICKERS HOWELL. Wellington, February 17.
