BURMA POSITION

Signs Of Improvement

LONDON, February 14. In Burma Fourteenth Army troops arc lushing on with the job of clearing the Japanese, from our communication lines ■nst of the Arakan Mountains. After

the confusion caused by the Japanese thrust round the Fourteenth Army’s left, flank a few days ago the situation is im-

proving steadily. Fighting continues on the whole Arakan front, and it is stated officially that the general situation is unchanged. though there are signs that the Japanese positions continue to deteriorate. The R.A.F. is maintaining its strong offensive over the battle area, and over Japanese headquarters positions and supply routes further back. /

Over the forward qrea our fighters clashed with a Japanese force, destroyed one enemy fighter and damaged thirteen without loss to themselves. R.A.F. fighter-bombers flew more than two hundred sorties in a day and night offensive from the Arakan front to the Chin hills, in the north. The United .States Tenth Air Force celebrated its second anniversary in India with 120 sorties against the Japanese in north Burma. These attacks cost one Allied plane. A Chungking message says that since the Chinese captured Kadjanga, in northern Burma, the reinforced Japanese have made several unsuccessful counterattacks in their retreat toward Laawanga. Another Chinese unit completely wiped l out an enemy detachment 'west of Taiphagu.
