Strength Of French Coast Defences LONDON, February 14. “There will be no evasive action and no withdrawal in my theatre of operations',” declared Field-Marshal von Runtlstedt, Commander of the Nazi forces in France, interviewed by the German overseas news agency. “The coast and its deeply echeloned fortifications must be defended to the last,” he added. “As an expert on France, I look forward calmly to the coming events. I know the enemy has completed offensive preparations, but we are prepared. Our roantai fortifications have been eoustruned quite differently and much more effectively than the Mnginot Line. We took measures long ago against expected airborne landings, but they must remain secrrt.” Vichy radio announced that the Germans have placed all five French Mediterranean coastal departments under German military control, similar to the north coast of France. The object is to strengthen the defences of the coastal zones.
