Reclamation Activities

The National Council for the Reclamation of Waste Material has issued a statement showing tonnages of paper collected, sorted, baled and railed by .4-. affiliated committees located in all populated areas in the North Island. To fulfil an arrangement made with the North Island paper board mill and to keep it working nt full capacity to fulfil orders required by the Ministry, of Supply, approximately 100 tons of waste paper are wanted weekly. For the nine months ended December 31 last the tonnage actually delivered reach 3147 tons. Of this total Auckland city contributed 1318 and Wellington city 1120 tons. Eight of the next largest cities and towns, Gisborne, Hamilton, Hastings, Napier, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Wanganui and Whaugarei, sent in 470 tons., and 32 other smaller towns from Dargaviile in the far north to Levin in the south railed 226 tons. A rather close contest is revealed in the tonnage (averaging 5S each) handled by Gisborne, New Plymouth, Palmerston North and Wanganui—the-varia-tion oyer the nine months showing hardly one ton difference. Next, to Wellington find Auckland. Hamilton holds leadership in the secondary group, while Ilawcra heads the third. During the three months period ended December, five lowns actually increased collections aiid output by 100 per cent, as compared with the previous six months ended June 30. The chairman of the council, Mr. J. W. Collins, in notifying the committees of the above results, lias indicated that his council desires every effort to be made to provide a further 1800 tons during the three months ending March 31 next. If achieved, this will give a total of 5000 tons for the full 12 months’ period. Late next month the national council proposes to make its third Dominion drive for cleaning rags urgently required by rhe armed forces. The Girl Guides’ Association. which has already collected nearly 60 tons in two previous appeals, will again co-operate bv calling on all households in the Dominion. .
