OZEL’S WAIROA CUP

Shortage Of Jockeys

(By Telegraph—From St. Simon). WAIROA, February 13.

The Wairoa Racing Club’s annual meeting held at Te Kupenga on Saturday was ono of the first to be affected by the travel restrictions, but in spite of the handicap the gathering was successful and should not involve the club iu any loss. The card was the best for some years, but some of tlie horses were unable to reach the meetings and others who did could not be started because of a shortage of jockeys. The Wairoa Cup was won easily by the favourite, Gael, and Kinueff a hack, succeeded in the Ormond Memorial. Hard Rock, who won the Trial Handicap, and Tideover, the Hack Cup winner, were both at good prices. The programme was enhanced by a splendid array of trophies donated by local sportsmen, and attached to seven of the eight races. These were presented to the winning owners by her Excellencys Lady Newall, who was a spectator of most of the programme. Hastings and Napier stables won live races, the remaining three going to Gisborne horses, two of. whom are trained by J. Nicolson. The Trentham apprentice rider-J. Garth rode three winners and J. Campbell was successful twice. The day was fine and hot and the track was dead after heavy overnight rain. There was a large attendance, and the totalizator handled £10,022, compared with £17,755 last year, a decrease of £1733. ' Hard Rock, a four-year-old by Sporting Blood, having his first start, won the Trial Handicap. He moved into second place behind Hula Chief approaching the straight, and these two fought it out, Hard Rock winning by a head. Dashup, who led early and dropped baek to third, held that position to the post, and Wbangal was always fourth. Kiudlewood, Gallant son and Timothy did best of the others. Tlniotby was well placed early but was' checked at the half-mile and drifted baek.

St. Bill made most of the pace in the Te Kupenga Handicap and led into the straight from Magnus Lux, Desert Ace and Silver Coin. Magnus Lux took St. Bill’s measure at the distance and appeared set for an easy, win, but Silver Coin came fast along the rails and took the major prize by a neck, St. Bill was four lengths away third and Strong Thread beat the other two runners. Ozcl, the favourite, pulled herself to the front at the end of a furlong in the wairoa Cup and was never afterward headed. About three furlongs from home she was allowed her head and she was three lengths clear of Hasten, Lastik and Fiddler’s Green. Turning for home she increased the margin to four lengths at the post and Hasten held off Lastik for second money. Fiddler’s Green moved short all the way and pulled up very sore. The Maiden Stakes was won by Golden Souvenir, a two-year-old half-brother by tJ 3 ?,? Kindbrgartenr Sanger. Raid, lamaiti Pai, Laurium and blsu were the leaders to the straight from Golden Souvenir and Cardonian. Tamaitl Pai ran very wide into line, leaving Sanger in charge, but Golden Souvenir strode through to the lead and quickly had the race won, finishing clear of Cardoman, who ran on solidly to head Laurium on the post, with another head to Langer. Tolerant, Quaint Song, Thelodessa, Lady Lustre and Bold Raid were next to arrive.

Haughty. Queen, the outsider of five runners, beat the favourite, Royal Greek, fin the Carroll Memorial. These two shared the pace for half a mile, where First Edition joined Royal Greek and Haughty Queen cropped baek to third. Royal Greek had dear charge at the distance, but Haughty Queen finished full of running and beat him comfortably. Royal Greek having to ibe shaken up to hold second money from First Edition. Dashup was a poor fourth. Though showing signs of soreness, Kinneff was equal to beating his four opponents in the Ormond Memorial Handicap. He was kept at the rear early while Pompit and Hunting Blood made the pace and moved up at the last furlong to tackle Pompit and beat him comfortably by a length. There was a gup of nearly three lengths to Ozel, who was unequal to the nine-pound handicap imposed on her for winning the Cup. Tideover, a maiden performer, won the Champion Hack Handicap from Silver Coin and Aupunga, both of whom received bad runs. Strong Thread tried to win all the way, but gave way to Many Stitches turning into the straight, with Gold Dip next. Then came Tideover (wide out), Aupunga and Silver Coin. Tideover got to the front at the distance and battled on well to hold off a-late run by Silver Coin and beat her by a head. Aupunga; who did not secure a clear run, was a length away third and Many Stitches was fourth.

Darag. finished more solidlv than usual to win the Rauwa Handicap, for which he was favourite but at good odds. He was prominent among the bunch which led to.the straight, with Hirst Girl. Walk Off. St. (Bill and First Edition, and he held them all at bay. Haughty Queen, making her second appearance for the day, was (badly served at the start and was last away, iglie made a.great recovery to run Darag to half a length. She was very unlucky and probably Would have won with an even dispatch. Walk Off was always prominent and finished a godd third, and First. Edition was fourth, with Big Wonder and Dusky Boy next. Hirst Girl dropped out after being second to the straight, and Theatre, who shared the lead early, also retired beaten some distancc from home. Details Of The Racing Trial Handicap, of £llO.
