ORPHANAGES BENEFIT
“Homewood” Garden Party Opened By Mrs. Fraser Assistance for the two homes being supervised in Wellington by the Presbyterian Orphanages and Special Service Association was given on Saturday afternoon when friends and supporters attended a garden party held in the grounds of “Homewood,” Mr. and Mrs. B. Sutherland’s residence at Karori. The Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, and Mrs. Fraser, who performed the official opening, were received by Mrs. R. Tait, president of the P.S.S.A. women’s auxiliary, and Mrs. H. S. Cross. Mr. H. S. Cross, the association’s superintendent: and secretary, introduced Mrs. Fraser and commented on the increased interest being taken in the work the church was accomplishing among children. Many fine young people who had been brought up in the homes were now serving their country, said Mrs. Fraser when appealing for generous support toward the great work of providing such homes and spiritual training for children in need. Guests found a diversity of attractions within the grounds, which were open to members of the public for the first time this year. Shady evergreens and shrubs, flowers and native fern made an attractive swimming pool setting for the swimming instruction demonstration given by Mrs. Ijah McCabe and her team of girls. Items were played by the Caledonian Pipe Band, and the association’s women’s auxiliary, assisted by young men andwomen from bible classes throughout the Wellington district, provided afternoon tea and other refreshments.
