Blakeley Retains Title

The beautiful sunny weather ou Satur(inv drew <1 lar«e crowd to tlic ix<iron baths for the Karori Amateur Swimming Club’s annual carnival. The long and varied programme was followed by the spectators with keen interest. Two Wellington provincial freestyle championships were decided during the afternoon. OVaughan, Welllngtou club, won the oOj ds. title bv inches from P. McCormick, Fetone, with P. Parkhouse, Wellington clu'b, a foot away third. Blakeley, who is swimming as well as ever, won the title last year from Jones. The teams diving event revealed some verv promising young divers, one in partitular being Miss Peacock, the 14-year-old member of the Karori B team, whose free, easv action on the board and entry is a credit to her trainer, Mr. J. Penman, exchampion of Wellington. Iu a brief speech before the opening, Mr C M. Bowden. M.P. for the district, congratulated the clu'b on the magnificent progress it had made this season. It has the largest membership of any clu'b iu Wellington and he complimented the officials on their good work among the juveniles of the district in teaching them swimming. Watson then tired and Blakeley went to the lead with Parkhouse at his shoulders and Jones and O'Neil moving up fast. Jones passed Parkhouse, at the 300yds. mark, Blakeley then holding a lead of about five yards. The last two laps saw Jones making, up the leeway, but Blakeley held his winning position by half a yard. Peck Shield Harbour Race.

The annual harbour swim for the Peck Shield will !bc held on Saturday at Evans Bay. the starting point being the Hataitai Swimming dub’s sheds. The race is to start at. 3 p.m.. and air competitors must •be at the sheds not later than 2.15 for medical examination. Entries have been received from Wanganui, Palmerston North and Masterton. '
