Consignments of comforts for servicemen and civilians, both overseas and in the Dominion, will be seriously affected by the fire which destroyed large stocks in the comforts department of the Auckland city sub-centre of the Red Cross ►Society. Paterson, chairman of the Auckland sub-centre, said that very large stocks were held in, the building, which was-the society’s central store in Auckland, and it will be extremely difficult to replace most of it. Several consignments of goods were packed awaiting shipment overseas, including used clothing for the distressed civilians of Europe, babies’ clothing which had been request ed by the British lied Cross Society, clothing for the relief of distressed people in Greece, and hospital requirements and woollen garments for prisoners of war. Several electric sewing machines also were destroyed.
Till the present premises are repaired, the comforts department has transferred its headquarters to its former address in 14 Commerce Street. All meriibers reported for duty yesterday. An appeal is made to members and friends for sewing machines, tables, chairs, crockery, and used clothing to enable the comforts department to resume its full activities.
