VITAL PLACE IN DEMOCRACY

Freedom Of The Press Members of the New Zealand Women Writers and Artists’ Society met in Wellington last Tuesday night to hear an address by Mr. Oliver Duff. Taking as his theme, “The Newspaper in Relation to the State,” Mr. Duff outlined a picture of the free Press as it worked in democratic countries under normal conditions. Tn contrast to this was State control in time of war and its effects on the public. While stressing that such control was essential, he warned bis listeners of the possibility of further curtailment when peace returned, inviting them to visualize how lack. of freedom of expression was likely to influence creative work. Miss M. Seaton, president, was in the chair, and welcomed members to the gathering, which was the first to be held this year.
