LINEN FLAX CROPS
Despite the dry weather linen flax crops in the Tapanui and Gore areas have proved much more satisfactory than had been expected at the start of the season. The most pleasing feature is the low percentage of rejections, though the response to the appeal to farmers to grow flax has not ’been encouraging. The prevalence of rust in almost every crop has been the subject: of conjecture. One theory advanced, however, is that it has been caused by the humid conditions. In the Tapanui district 346 acres have been sown and the sowings in the Gore area have amounted to 312 acres. Pulling operations should begin within the next two weeks. '
