Relation To Producers
“A question exercising the public mind is in relation to the growth of the Public Service. This growth is not peculiar to New Zealand, but we are concerned only with this country and witli the standard of living desired here,” said Mr. C. N. Cathie, retiring president, in his address at the annual meeting of the Wellington Alanufacturers’ Association last night. “The number of people on the taxpavers’ payroll cannot grow out of proportion to ‘tiie body of producers without a reduction of living standard tollowing. "Jf there are fewer of the population looking after food production and making essential goods, they must work longer hours or 'in the total produce less. Invention looks after some of the output, but we are apt to forget that the inventions require servicing. The fewer manhours we use in government, the more there are left for production, and more goods and services can be made available.”
