GERMAN RETREAT IN CORSICA

LONDON, September 28.. The Germans have evacuated Aleria, on the east coast of Corsica, 40 miles south of Bastia. This means that all they hold of Corsica is a stretch some 40 miles long and varying in width from a few miles to about 20 miles. A correspondent says that the enemy are making great use of mines and demolitions as they withdraw, but French troops and patriots are using commando tactics successfully. Their favourite trick is to cut in on the retreating Germans unexpectedly, and then, having isolated a small group, mop it up. The enemy has lost many men in this way. LEGENTILHOMME’S NEW POST

ALGIERS, September 28. General Paul Legentilhomme, has been appointed Commissioner of National Defence. He was formerly Commissioner for War in General de Gaulle’s Free French Committee in Loudon, and later became French High Commissioner m the Indian Ocean zone. The appointment is regarded as a sign of the National Committees determination not to allow General Giraud to have overriding powers. LONDON, September 29..

The French National Committee met in stormy session today when the Corsican campaign and the handling of the Corsican political situation caused, a crisis and a renewed clash of personalities, says Reuter’s Algiers correspondent. General Legentilhomme’s appointment as Commissioner of National Defence represents a determined bid to establish the French republican tradition of the supremacy of civilian over military power. General Giraud, has lost some, of his supreme jurisdiction in the military field.
