HEAVY YIELD

Potato Crops At Pukekohe Dominion Special Service. AUCKLAND, September 27. Wiiat is believed to be a record, yield for September has marked the beginning of the new potato season at Pukekohe. The yield from one acre on Pukekohe Hill, where digging commenced last week, is over four tons. This is stated to be well in excess of previous September yields, ami is probably a record for the district. Between two ifnd three tons to the acre is considered a good September crop. Another, grower who has commenced digging reports a yield of three tons and a half to the acre.

Growers who planted before heavy rain held up operations from the end of May till ei”’ly July have been favoured by good weather. Frosts in many parts of the district have been negligible and there has -been an absence of the high winds which last year were largely responsible for the poor yield of about one ton and a half to the acre.

. Several growers will commence, digging this week, but because of the setback in June there will probably be little more digging till the end of October or early November, when good crops are expected. The price to growers is £42/10/- a ton till the end of September, when there will be a drop of £7/10/- a ton.
