REPORTS ON CAMPS

Prisoners Of War

The Prisoners of War Inquiry Office headquarters has received a copy of a letter written in July by a New Zealander located at Stalag 383. He states that they have one month’s reserve of food parcels in the store and that he has two pairs of boots, one of which is brandnew, also two pairs of battledress trousers, one jacket and an overcoat, besides all the personal clothing sent him by his next-of-kin. A report has been received on a visit of the International Red Cross- delegate in July to Japanese prisoner of. war camps. It is stated that the weight of the prisoners is increasing and the health conditions are better. A canteen has been established and the prisoners keep pigs. At Shanghai satisfactory conditions generally are maintained and the prisoners of war are in good spirits. Endeavours are being made by the Red Cross to supplement foodstuffs, specially those containing vitamin B. The report on another camp states- that housing, food and general arrangements are of a very high standard. Relations between the military camp authorities and the prisoners are said to be excellent.
