WELL WORTH SEEING

Spring Flowers Draw Crowd To Wellington Show Against the green-covered tiers on which they were arranged, rows upon rows of lovely daffodils made a sight well worth sceng. when the Wellington Horticultural .Society held its spring show yesterday. The blooms were arranged round the three sides of the Sydney Street Hall and in front of the stage was hanked a colourful profusion of all kinds ot Rowers and flowering plants and shrubs. This was the work of the Wellington City ’Council, and, as Mrs. Knox Gilmer said, it was a magnificent disP1 pi’nk camellias of all kinds and richtoned cyclamen glowed among the pale golden and white spring flowers, which formed the theme of the display. Magnolias. acacias, hyacinths, japonica, grevillia, kowhai, nndromeda, manuka, begonias and the flamingo plant helped to make this beautiful exhibit, with its backing of palms and fringe of camellias strewn at the base. Stands of cinerarias, rhododendrons, cyclamen, hyacinths and violets about the hall echoed the colours to be found in the large display. Gnomes, miniature cactus, tiny shell “ponds” with forget-me-not flowers afloat, were features of the growing gardens in small dishes. The decorative stand drew many interested visitors to the show. From the pale pink blossom that topped the stand to the perfect small posies, each exhibit was an example of the skill and artistic ability of the women who arranged them. Japonica in a shallow silver dish, or reflected in a plate-glass base from a crystal vase, as shown, seemed to give it added beauty. Tall blue irises and golden kowhai made an excellent combination for a large flat bowl and the baskets and troughs of mixed flowers were a delight to the eye. Lady Myers, who officially opened the show, was presented with a sheaf of flowers by Hie president, Mrs. Knox Gilmer. Mrs. Gilmer wore pink orchids in her shoulder spray and quite a number of other women present wore flowers. Mrs. Gilmer entertained members of the official party to afternoon tea.
