FLYING SAND

Lyall Bay Residents’ Complaint

The nuisance caused by flying sand, from the beach at Lyall Bay is perennial. During the last month or six weeks high gales both from the south and north, have lifted sand from the beach, hurling it in eddying gusts 50 feet in height over the seaside areas, much to the annoyance of the residents, who protest that thev have had an exceptionally uncomfortable experience this year. Sand has been piled high against the concrete retaining wall, till it reached within ft couple of feet from the top and even when it reached that altitude the gales found it easy material to play with. To relieve the position a bulldqzer has been employed this week, removing the sand from against the wall. Residents of houses which stand along the promenade between Onepu Road and Freyberg Street, and even those further away trust that the City Council will keep the bulldozer at work till calmer conditions preV * l b’ne of the main troubles from this flying sand is the manner in which spoutings and down-pipes become clogged from time to time, so that when heavy rain falls they cannot serve the purpose for which they were erected.. It is said that one section on the waterfront is two feet higher than it was when the house was built and one of the steady jobs on this section is the clearing of the ventilators so that some air can obtain entrance below the floor. . r A resident said that it used to cost the council £2OO a year' to keep the sand clear of the retaining wall by the use of a horse-drawn scoop. Now the city council made about £2OOO a year by the sale of gravel off the beach, and up to the present little had been done to alleviate the sand nuisance.

An aged draught mare foaled triplets on a farm near Blenheim on Monday. All were well formed but were dead. One was of normal size, the others being much smaller. Equine triplets arc exticmely rare. —P.A.
