Maternity Benefits
Sir,—l am a young mother expecting mv seventh child, and am nearly distracted at the ridiculous cost of a layette—25/6 per dozen for napkins, against 12/6 24 vears ago, cotton wool 3/6. buttennusliii 1/- per yard against 4d. or 6d With all this talk about increased ■population why not be sincere and genuinely help mothers who are trying to do their duty. Apart from the baby, what about the other children? Where is domestic help to be procured ? My husband has his business to attend to and is absolutely unable to stay at home; apart from this there is the financial worry. Hospital, layette and other necessities £l5, where are the free benefits? If I had half of what the Government takes from my husband's salary it would ease things a little. Why is the rate of his Social Security tax equal to that of a single man?—I am, etc., LOS K OF SINCERITY. Wellington, September 18.
