RICE FOR CIVILIANS
Temporary Shortage In Australia SYDNEY, August 12. Supplies of rice for the Australian population have been suspended temporarily. The step has been taken because the native populations of the Pacific islands now depend on Australian rice for their existence and Australia has accepted the responsibility of feeding them. The Australian and New Zealand services are also supplied. The consumption of rice by natives of Fiji, New Hebrides, Now Caledonia, and other Fighting French islands of the Pacific is stated to be 81b. a head a. week. Plans are in train to expand the Australian rice-growing industry.
