OBITUARY

Mr. C. J. Erenstrom The death occurred in the Palmerston North Hospital on Sunday of a well-known citizen, Mr, Charles John Erenstrom. He was the only son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. Erenstrom, and was born in Amah Sweden in 1869, coming to New’ Zealand at an early age. He was among the first pupils of the Whakarongo School, this being the district, in which his parents first settled. In 1883 lie was appointed cadet teacher, and later was on the school committee. He, later, as a young man worked in the Manawatu flour mill, and, finally set up in business, with Mr. Andrews in a caterers and bakers store, but returned to the mill at a later date. Mr. Erenstrom took a great interest in horticulture, and held positions in the Palmerston North Horticultural Society, and the Chrysanthemum Club. His wife was formerly Miss Eleanor M. Tasker. Mr. John Lyons One of Hawkes Bay’s best-known sheepfarmers, Mr. John Lyons, died at his home in Ilautapu yesterday morning, states a “Dominion” Special Service message. Mr. Lyons had been in indifferent health for several months, but his death was sudden, and unexpected. Born at Maraekakaho iu .1883, he was educated at the Napier Boys’ High School, and, ou leaving school, he took up.sheepfarming at Greenhill with his stepfather, the late Mr.' Archibald McLean, who was oue of the province’s practical early settlers. In 1914 Mr. Lyons married Miss Mary Harding, of Mt. Vernon, a member of a widely-known Central Hawke's Bay family. He carried on farming at both Greenhill and Hautapu, being one of the best judges of stock in the province. He was,one of the foremost sheepfarmers of Hawke's Bay, maintaining his flocks on a high standard. He was closely associated with the breeding of stud beef Shorthorn cattle, which were widely Used throughout Hawke’s Bay as a foundation for the beef herds of today. Cattle of numerous stations show the strain of Greenhill Shorthorns, which have made a big contribution to the high standard of beef raised in the province. Mr. Lyons’s maiu public activity was with the Hawke's Bay A. and P. Society, of which he was vice-president, and he served as committeeman for many years. He took an active interest in the affairs of the society, giving much assistance in advancing Hawke's Bay shows to their present high standard. Mr. Lyons was a director of \V. Richmond Ltd. His main sporting interest was in polo, in which he was a prominent player, _ having frequently represented Hawke's Bay. He played in the New Zealand side against Australia He leaves a wife and one son, Mr. lan Lyons, who is serving with the Royal Navy, and one daughter, Miss Jean Lyons.
