ASSESSMENT COURT

Compensation Granted Compensation totalling £1046 was sought under the Public Works Act by Mrs. Catherine Elizabeth Clayton, Lower Hutt, in a case which came before the Assessment Court in Wellington on Monday. Judgment, was delivered yesterday, when it was announced that the Court unanimously awarded a gross sum of £737 on all accounts, including interest to date, costs, £3O, with witnesses’ expenses and disbursements to the amount fixed by the registrar to lie paid by respondent, who was Minister of Public Works, and assessors’ fees at £lO/10/- to be paid by respondent. The Chief. Justice (Sir Michael Myers) presided, assessors being Messrs. W. 11. Leighton (for claimant) and Dunbar Sloan for respondent. Mr. E. F. Rothwell appeared for claimant, and Mr. J. Prendeville for the Crown. Part of tlie laud, which was situated in the Epuni Hamlet Block, Belmont Survey District, it was stated in the claim, had been taken for housing purposes, and notice had been given by proclamation this year of intention to take oilier land for railway purposes. For the taking of 3 roods 26 perches of land tin amount of £5-16 was claimed. Another £5OO was sought as compensation for injurious effect consequent upon the severance of the land, making the remainder, it was considered, unsuitable for a factory existing there, with consequent loss of revenue from, and of value attaching to, the present factorj- site.
