31,491,811 Paid Admissions During 1940-41 The increasing popularity of picture theatre entertainment in New Zealand is reflected in the statistics of cinematograph theatres for 1940-41, which show that there were 31,491,811 paid admissions during the year compared with 31,171,130 in 1030-40 and 29,809,454 in 1038-30. There are 572 picture theatres in New Zealand, of which 232, or approximately 40 per cent., are in the Auckland province. The seating accommodation totals 271,535. Of the 572 theatres, 108 screen on six days a week anti 185 on odd days during the week. The remaining ISO theatres or hails are engaged by circuit operators. During the year 2070 persons were employed in picture theatres, of whom 1609 were part-time employees. The average number of attendances a hgad of population during the year is given as 10. but since this population includes a large number of persons who are unable to attend pictures, it can be assumed that the average number of attendances is much greater.
