Hint Of Fresh Nazi Demands HITLER AND PETAIN TO MEET LONDON, November 23. According to a Berne message, Hitler plans to meet Marshal Petain somewhere in France next week and will make a determined bid to secure Nazi control in North Africa. The Berne message adds that Hitler is likely to make exacting demands, including the use of French warships to covoy Axis ships and control of the air bases in both North and West Africa. It is also considered that if LieutGeneral Cunningham's offensive in Libya gains impetus permission will be sought for the use of Tunisia as a sanctuary for Axis troops. Mr. A. V. Alexander, First Lord of the Admiralty, said in London yesterday that the situation in France might have a very important effect on the war within the next few months. He said: “The Navy is not looking for extra work; it has a lot but it will do its best.”
Berlin correspondents of Swedish newspapers make it clear that the removal of General Weygand has delighted the Nazi Government. One correspondent says that the position of French North and West Africa would assume proportions of importance in German eyes if the British campaign in Libya were successful.
